What Is the Rice Purity Test?
The rice purity test is a 100-question checklist. You tick every experience you have had — romantic, sexual, social, or related to substances and legal trouble. When you finish, your score drops from 100 by one point for each box you checked. A score close to 100 means you have had very few of those experiences. A low score means you have had many of them.
Nobody judges you here. The test is not scientific. It started as a fun way for first-year students at Rice University to bond during orientation week (O-Week). Today people of all ages take the rice purity test online — alone, with a partner, or with friends.

History of the Rice Purity Test
The rice purity test original goes back to 1924. The Rice Thresher — the student newspaper at Rice University in Houston, Texas — printed a short 10-question survey for female students. The questions were simple: “Have you ever been drunk?” or “Did you ever dance in a way people might frown at?”
The rice university purity test stayed small for decades. Then in 1988, the Thresher ran a much bigger version with 150 questions. After that, it spread fast. By the 1990s, universities across the US — including MIT and Carnegie Mellon — had their own versions. Some went up to 2,000 questions.
The new rice purity test of today still uses 100 questions. In 2024 and 2025, TikTok made it a global thing. Millions of people share their scores online every week. What started as a private college ritual is now one of the most well-known online quizzes on the internet.
How Does the Rice Purity Test Work?
The scoring system is simple. You start with a perfect score of 100. Each experience you check removes one point. When you reach the end, whatever number is left is your rice purity score.

Average Rice Purity Score By Age
No single “good” score exists for everyone. Age matters a lot when reading your purity test score. Here is a rough guide based on what is commonly reported:

Limitations and Criticism of the Purity Test
The purity test has real problems worth knowing about before you take it.
- It is not scientific. There is no research behind it. It measures nothing about your mental health, values, or character.
- “Purity” is a loaded word. The concept comes from old cultural ideas that do not apply equally to everyone. A low score is sometimes seen as something to brag about, which puts unfair pressure on people to try risky things.
- It skips context. Someone who checked a box because of trauma and someone who checked it by choice will get the same score. Numbers erase stories.
- It is not age-appropriate for young teens. Many questions are explicitly adult. The rice purity test for students in high school is very different from the one meant for college seniors.
None of this means the test is worthless. Used lightly, as a fun self-reflection tool among adults who understand its limits, it is harmless. Just do not let a number tell you who you are.
